Vice President of Events

Job description

Foreign Policy’s Events business has been a growth driver over the past two years. We’ve built out a robust virtual events program, from focused one-hour virtual dialogues to multi-day summits. As we plot a re-entry to in-person events in early 2022, FP is seeking a VP of Events to lead us strategically and creatively by building on FP’s unique capabilities and strengths while continuing to set ourselves apart from the competition. This position reports into the Publisher and is supported by an Associate Director and up to three additional staff. 

What you'll do:

Strategy & Management

  • Understand and keep current on geopolitical issues relevant to FP’s audience and clients

  • Brainstorm new event formats and subject areas and help the Strategic Development team take them to market

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Associate Director of Events and develop and grow a staff of three: a Program Manager, an Audience Development Manager, an intern, and several contractors

  • Map out and execute plan for creating compelling integrated hybrid events that can attract sponsors and audiences (simultaneously in-person and virtual) in 2022

Content Management & Speaker Recruitment

  • Effectively synthesize complex topics and needs of Sponsors into compelling, digestible concept ideas, liaising and brainstorming with both clients and FP Editorial Leadership as appropriate

  • Formulate content strategies and produce content, including but not limited to:
    • Program sketches, outlines and pitches for potential clients

    • Finalized and polished programs after consultation with clients, sales & editorial

    • Polished speaker briefing materials

    • Email marketing and messaging for digital/social advertising

  • Speaker curation and outreach: Identify prospective speakers with an eye on curating high-level lineups that are on-topic, innovative, diverse and will be an audience draw; ability to energetically and creatively track down and pursue target speakers globally

  • Work closely with Executive Producer of FP Live to program newsmakers as appropriate

  • Oversee content development and delivery that meets specific event objectives/client priorities, while continuing to serve the interests of FP’s event audience and protecting the FP brand

Project management

  • Work with the Associate Director to develop and maintain full-scale, detailed project plans for use in tracking key project milestones and deliverables

  • Collaborate and communicate cross-functionally to ensure buy-in and successful execution of event strategy (by the events team and other relevant FP staff /freelancers)

  • Create detailed production timelines, scripts and run-of-show documents

  • Work closely with production vendors (virtual & physical) to ensure smooth execution of events

  • Make recommendations on internal event processes or technology, supporting configuration, testing, and execution

  • Oversee production schedules for virtual broadcasts (scripts, coordination with streaming/video production engineers) as well as live hybrid events

  • Assure venues, staffing, F&B, vendors, etc., for both in-person and virtual events are on brand, budget and schedule

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated interest in foreign policy / global affairs at the intersection of policy and business

  • Prior events, marketing, journalism and/or content management experience

  • Excellent copywriting and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to navigate speaker networking, utilizing contacts to identify experts and leaders, both elected, appointed and professional, while avoiding potential conflicts

  • History of working successfully with high calibre editorial and content teams

  • Demonstrated success managing complex and dynamic projects with experience managing temp support (freelancers)

  • Experience in the virtual and video production landscape, aware of current trends, technologies, vendors, and best practices for delivering compelling programs; experience with webinars and/or livestreaming on social media preferred; broadcast production experience is a plus!

  • Strong aptitude for time management and prioritizing between simultaneous work streams

  • Creative, innovative, and resourceful, with a get-it-done mentality

  • High-energy individual with a strong sense of ownership who will take pride in their performance and its impact on the events team and the company’s overall success

  • Familiar with GSuite Apps, Zoom, Wordpress, e-mail marketing and/or CRM tools
