Job description

Foreign Policy (FP), the global leader in geopolitical analysis & news, is searching for a director to run its fast-growing subscriptions business. FP’s Director of Subscriptions will be responsible for acquiring and retaining digital subscribers across all marketing channels: onsite, email, social, search, and audio. Reporting to the Publisher, the person in this role will be tasked with net subscriber and revenue growth for individual subscribers.

The Subscriptions Director will also be responsible for developing subscriber lifecycle strategy to drive engagement, conversion, and nurturing paid and non-paid subscribers with relevant and personalized communications and outreach. The person in this role should be an expert at using data analysis to drive audience targeting, decision-making, and reporting.

As a key stakeholder in the FP’s financial health, the Subscriptions Director will master accurate and meaningful data to comprise budgets and forecasts and will be accountable for pricing, marketing and managing spend to the agreed strategy.

Key responsibilities:

  • Digital and print subscriptions strategy, planning, and execution across the subscriber lifecycle

  • Subscription funnel management and A/B testing to optimize conversion rates and inform pricing strategy & value proposition

  • Implement paid acquisition campaigns through Google Ad Words, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other platforms.

  • Work closely with the Marketing Team in design & execution of acquisition and retention plans, campaigns & analysis through targeted onsite messaging and email communications.

  • Set measurable goals and define KPIs for new and renewing subs while partnering with the VP of Data on reporting and analysis, budget management, and forecasting.

  • Thoroughly test and iterate on subscriber acquisition flow to improve user experience across all subscription tiers.

  • Help Group Subscriptions Director maximize business growth, sales, and retention plans.

  • Drive engagement & renewal efforts along with Editorial, Marketing, Group Sub, and Product and Development teams

  • Essential part of paywall management team.

  • Work with customer support to scope new feature requests and identify product bugs/issues.

  • Working with FP Editorial and FP Analytics to define audiences and develop attractive propositions for both FP core and Insider offerings.

  • Develop FP brand voice, subscription offers, and subscriber communication style and copywriting


  • Proven digital subs marketing & growth execution track record

  • Knowledge of digital acquisition strategy using on-site, email, social, search, events, and audio tools

  • Success at retention strategy, planning, and delivery

  • Proven data and analytical skills

  • Campaign strategy, planning, and analysis

  • Experience leading effective teams

  • Excellent communication, copywriting, and presentation skills

  • A roll-up your sleeves, scrappy, entrepreneurial approach
