Contract Copy Editor

Job description

Foreign Policy is a magazine of global news and ideas. We explain Washington to the world and the world to Americans—and we do that by covering big trends in not only security and defense but also issues surrounding climate change, immigration, politics, culture, and more. FP is more than just a magazine: It has a flourishing podcast division, regular high-profile virtual events, and an analytics division that has been at the forefront of research on gender parity, 5G and security, and more.

We are seeking a meticulous, internationally aware contract copy editor. You will copy-edit and fact-check articles ranging from 800-word news briefs to 6,000-word long-form articles. This is a remote part-time opportunity that will include 2-3 days per month and support during our quarterly print cycles. You must be able to provide services during East Coast business hours.

Requirements

  • At least two years of professional copy-editing experience, particularly with articles about foreign policy and international news
  • Knowledge and mastery of AP style
  • Perfectionism with spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage
  • Passionate about detail and getting things right
  • Awareness of world events
  • Ability to maintain composure in a boisterous, fast-paced newsroom
  • Speed when it comes to time-sensitive articles
  • Ability to make judgments among competing English transliterations of foreign words
  • Good judgment to know when to adhere to house style and when to allow writers artistic license
  • Schedule flexibility
  • Fact-checking experience is a plus.
  • Foreign-language skills are a plus.
